The Moon and Tarot

by

Do you have vivid dreams when there is a full moon? Do you feel more emotional at this phase of the lunar cycle? If so, this could be a good time for you to do a Tarot reading!

The time of the full moon is a period of heightened power. The moon is at it’s brightest, illuminating the earthly realm with its brilliance, and it brings an increase in psychic abilities. A full moon is a time of reflection, inspiration, and creativity.

For many people, the full moon is seen as a Mother Goddess who blesses her children with a subtle, yet significant boost to their intuition. She also illuminates the soul and gently nudges you towards your spiritual goals.

In the Rider-Waite Tarot, the card called The Moon has many symbols worth noting. The first is the image of the moon itself, with its moon rays shining upon a surreal landscape that seems to have been derived from a strange dream. The serene face of the Goddess gazes upon a dog and a wolf. In his book, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot, Arthur Waite (the designer of this card) writes that these animals represent “the fears of the natural mind.” In other words, they are the primitive, instinctual aspects of the mind, barking and howling at the unknown.

Another prominent symbol is the crayfish that slowly crawls from the pond. It represents a thought emerging from the depths of the subconscious mind. If you repress your darkest thoughts and feelings, they eventually reappear when you are receptive and able to process them…they are revealed during dreams or nightmares when there is an opportunity for the mind to safely purge itself of these unwanted aspects of your nature.

The towers from the Death card are also featured in this image. A path leads from the pond of the subconscious and meanders between the towers to the mountains in the background. This path represents the passage through the gates of consciousness into the distant realms of self-realisation.

The interpretations of these symbols may sound dark and mysterious, but this card is all about the light of understanding that shines from an acceptance of these situations. The moon is a feminine symbol of the inner world, and this card shows that when fears are dealt with, the result is freedom. The card called The Moon is all about gentle, yet profound changes to your inner self. In The Pictorial Key to the Tarot, Waite offers a simple and beautiful meaning to this card… “The message is: Peace, be still…”

As a Tarot reader, you are probably sensitive to your environment, which can be difficult at times, but extremely helpful on other occasions. At the next full moon, use this sensitivity to tune into the Moon Goddess’s power. Call upon Mother Moon to enhance your intuitive abilities and to bring extra clarity to your readings. She’s shining her light and wisdom for those who will appreciate it.
