The Hermit’s Journey

by

The great Persian poet and Sufi mystic Rumi asked, “When will you begin that long journey into yourself?” The Hermit is one who took that journey and gained awareness of his mind, body, and spirit. The Hermit travelled far and wide to broaden his perspectives and seek guidance from gurus. Eventually, he realized there was solace in solitude. He found that when you block out the distracting noise of the outer world, you can start to hear the whispers of wisdom from within. The Hermit now spends his time in the silent bliss of a solitary life. He is alone but not lonely. His retreat to the top of the mountains is symbolic of bringing stillness to the mind. He understands that serenity must be cultivated to achieve inner awareness.

Holding up his lantern, it seems as though he lights the path for other seekers and travellers, but be assured he doesn’t want companionship. The Hermit does not illuminate the mountain path for the company of others, nor does he beckon them for the opportunity to mentor their progress. The star in his lantern simply encourages persistence and diligence in the task of self-discovery. He knows that understanding the self through contemplation and meditation is the quickest way to enlightenment. Unfortunately, no one believes it can be that simple, so very few attempt it. It does seem easy, but it’s the most difficult spiritual challenge of all.

The Hermit’s role in the Tarot is to reveal that enlightenment is possible, but the path is steep. It’s available to the serious student of spirituality, and it involves the greatest challenge of all, which is to step back from the power of the ego and take a good look at yourself. Consider your flaws, your weaknesses, your fears, then release them with the understanding that these qualities are not the real you. The secret is to embrace your divine spirit and move forward with grace. Walk into the darkness of The Hermit’s cave and don’t come out until you discover the light within. Find your authentic essence and let it shine. This is the meaning of the star in the lantern. Are you ready for a spiritual adventure of that magnitude? Trust in the teachings of the Tarot’s Major Arcana and follow the guidance of The Hermit. Enlightenment awaits!
