How to Choose the Right Tarot Deck

by

If you’ve browsed through the Tarot section of a metaphysical bookstore lately (or an online one) you would have noticed a huge variety of Tarot decks beckoning to be bought. How are you going to know how to choose the right Tarot cards for you?

If you are a beginner, I suggest using a traditional deck like the Rider-Waite, which is the one I work with in my classes. Most Tarot books refer to the Rider-Waite deck when they give their interpretations, and many modern decks are simply variations on Rider-Waite themes.

Once you are comfortable with the Rider-Waite deck, you might want to stretch your comfort zone and look for a deck that is more appealing to your personal taste. Being familiar with the Rider-Waite system means you can easily transfer the meanings you have already learnt, and you can build upon that basis through the extra symbols on your new Tarot cards.

Even if you are an experienced reader, going back to basics with the Rider-Waite deck can help you pick up clues for a card’s real meaning. Their colours and symbols have been specifically designed to impart a clear interpretation to the reader.

When buying a new deck, check the size of the cards. Some are too large for small hands and they make shuffling a chore. But the main consideration in choosing a new Tarot deck is whether you are attracted to the images and colours. The cards must be pleasing to the eye and they must suit your nature, otherwise you are going to avoid using them.

Finding an appropriate deck is part of the enjoyment of Tarot. Use one that appeals to you and your readings will improve dramatically.
